laszip error (null) when loading a .laz file

I downloaded a laz file from https://apps.nationalmap.gov/lidar-explorer but had no way to view it. Someone recommended CloudCompare so I just downloaded and install it.

I confirmed I have the LAS (I/O Import) plugin from the Help->About Plugins screen.

I then went File->Open and selected the .laz file but got this error: "[LAS] laszip error '(null)'".

Am I doing something wrong?

Update: I was able to open the .las file of the same data set. I'm not sure what's different

Maybe a corrupted file then?

Which version are you using? On which OS?
